Andrey Rublev v Ricardas Berankis Head to Head

Their only previous encounter came on the Challenger circuit way back in 2014 with Berankis winning that hard court encounter in straight sets.

Rublev Opens Season with Easy Win

With fitness woes befalling on Rublev to kick the season off, there were doubts around how well prepared he was coming into the season’s first Grand Slam having not played a single competitive match this year.

As it turned out, there was nothing to worry about his form as Rublev started things off in style against Gianluca Mager, defeating the 65th-ranked player in straight sets.

Rublev needed just an hour and 26 minutes in a match that did not get remotely competitive, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.

The only time Rublev faced any kind of resistance was in the first set when he was broken right back while serving at 2-1 but that was the last time Mager had a chance to get close. Rublev broke back in the seventh game and proceeded to wrap things up with four more breaks of serves in the encounter.

He now takes on the experienced but struggling Berankis in round two.

Berankis Needs Five-Setter in Opener

After having made it past two qualifiers and Marcos Giron at the Melbourne Summer Set 1 in the first week of the season, Berankis kick-started the Australian Open with a five-set win over Roberto Baena Carballes.

Berankis came back from two sets to one down to complete a 6-1, 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory, needing three hours and 43 minutes of court-time to get there.

It was his 60 winners that stood apart for Berankis but to go with 66 unforced errors, it also meant he struggled to make things happen in the second and third set – where he lost 32 of them.

He now takes on a player who might have not featured in a lot of matches this season but purely on pedigree alone, would be a toughie to overcome.

Rublev v Berankis Prediction and Tip

This might not last too long with Rublev expected to wallop his opposition in straight sets and proceed to the third.
