Elise Mertens v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head
Mertens leads Begu 2-0, last defeating her in 2017.

Mertens Off to a Good Start
Elise Mertens had to work hard to win her first-round match in the Australian Open 2022. Facing Vera Zvonareva of Russia, she took the game 6-4, 7-5, in an hour and 53 minutes. The 19th seeded Belgian had 11 aces but 30 unforced errors – something she will need to improve as the competition gets more intense.
However, against an opponent like Begu, Mertens may be forgiven for her errors. After all, she is a formidable doubles player with five big finals to her name from last season (she won the Aus Open and Wimbledon doubles).
On the singles circuit at the same time, Mertens won the Gippsland Trophy and was a finalist in the Istanbul Cup.
The 26-year-old also reached the latter rounds in a handful of WTA events and while she didn’t do that well there to fully go the distance, this kind of consistency and pedigree alone makes her a formidable opponent.

Begu Survives Dodin
Irina-Camelia Begu didn’t have that smooth of a start to the first Grand Slam of the year. She found herself in a three-set quagmire against Oceane Dodin that ultimately ended in 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in two hours and 37 minutes. The Romanian struck 34 winners but ended up committing 46 unforced errors – still 19 less than Dodin.
She also arrived for the major on the back of a good start to the season. The 31-year-old was a quarterfinalist in Melbourne 1 where she ultimately fell to Amanda Anisimova.
Looking at her form in the competition, Begu has made it past the second round just once – in 2015. This time around, there is a slight possibility that she might do it again.
Currently ranked World No. 64, Begu enjoyed a slight revival towards the end of the last season when she was a finalist in the Cleveland Open (her first such feat since July 2017) and later reached the quarters in Tenerife and third round in the Indian Wells Open. So it’s not all dark and gloom – there is some cause to be positive.
Mertens v Begu Prediction and Tip
Mertens will start as the favourite but Begu will put up a fight. This has all the makings of being a three-setter.
