Tiafoe Gets First Win of 2022
Tiafoe recorded his first win of 2022 after battling through a 5-set epic against Argentine Trungelliti, winning the 2-hour 55-minute battle 3-6 6-4 6-2 3-6 6-3 to advance to round 2.
Prior to this, the American suffered opening round defeats in Adelaide. Firstly, against in form Kokkankis, losing a 3-set battle 3-6 7-5 6-1. Also in Adelaide, losing to Paul 6-2 6-3.
Throughout his opener in Melbourne, Tiafoe shot down 7 aces and won 78% of first serve points, with his first being broken 3 times throughout the 5-set encounter.
The 24-year-old was able to hit 50 winners and win 31 points at the net, eventually proving too hot to handle for Trungelliti, and made his way into round 2.
Tiafoe knows what it takes to beat Fritz, however, is going to have to play his best to stand a chance against his compatriot, a third-round birth would set up a tie with either Kohlschreiber or Bautista Agut.
