Kaia Kanepi is off to a great start in the Australian Open 2022 as she defeated the three-time Grand Slam winner, former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber in straight sets. The Estonian needed an hour and 22 minutes to seal the match with 6-4, 6-3, boasting of a strong service game and 31 winners (v Kerber’s 18).
Over the course of her rich career spanning across three decades, Kanepi has beaten a handful of top 10 players but was never particularly consistent with it. Case in point, she played in Melbourne Set 1 in early January and fell to the #67-ranked Ana Konjuh in round two.
Last year, the current World No. 115 alternated between ITF and WTA tours – she won two titles in the former while in the latter, she was a finalist in the Gippsland Trophy. Since then, however, Kanepi has lost in the early rounds of all other WTA tournaments.

Bouzkova Overcomes Marino
23-year-old Marie Bouzkova started her journey with a 6-1, 6-3 win over the Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino. This victory also marks her best-ever showing in the Australian Open. Another win and the Czech would have delivered her best results in a Grand Slam.
Currently ranked World No. 86, Bouzkova enjoyed a decent run ahead of the major, having reached round two in Adelaide International as a qualifier. Her last season, however, wasn’t particularly great.
If anything, it was quite similar to Kanepi’s – Bouzkova was a finalist in the Phillip Island Trophy and thereafter, she spent the majority of her season battling early-round exits. The Czech did make it as a semifinalist in Guadalajara and a quarterfinalist in Birmingham.

36-year-old Kanepi has played a lot more professional tennis than Bouzkova and carries a definite advantage. But Bouzkova is young, energetic, and coming off a fine run. In some ways, these players are evenly matched and may very battle till the end.
