Andrey Rublev v Marin Cilic Head to Head

Rublev leads 4-1 head to head. Cilic’s only win over the Russian came in their first-ever meeting in 2015. Since then it’s been Rublev all along.

In their two meetings last year Rublev won in straight sets in Miami and rallied from a set down to win in Cincinnati.

Ruthless Rublev Marches On

Andrey Rublev demolished Ricardas Berankis in an hour and 47 minutes on Thursday for a second consecutive straight sets win at the Australian Open.

Dominating the contest from start to finish, the Russian converted six of 15 break points, served 13 aces and dropped just four points on his first serve to clinch the contest 6-4, 6-2, 6-0.

The fifth seed, who was broken once in the first round match against Italy’s Gianluca Mager, didn’t face a break point in the second round until the last game, where he fended off four break points to send the Lithuanian packing.

The fifth seed, who struck 35 winners and 27 unforced errors in his match against Berankis, had come into the tournament with no practice behind him. He was scheduled to play at the ATP Cup, but tested positive for COVID-19 and delayed his visit to Australia.

A quarterfinalist in Melbourne last year, Rublev didn’t look rusty at all in the first match and gained momentum in the second.

Cilic Continues His Impressive Run

2018 Australian Open finalist Marin Cilic held off Slovakia’s Nobert Gombos to reach the third round of the tournament on Thursday and improve his 2022 record to 6-2.

Having started the year with back-to-back semifinal appearances in the two Adelaide tournaments, Cilic has continued his good form at the Melbourne major.

The Croatian began his campaign with a 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 win over Ecuadorean qualifier Emilio Gomez on Tuesday, but needed four sets to hold off Gombos in the second round.

The 2014 U.S. Open champion had little trouble in winning the first two sets as he didn’t face a break point in either of them, while break his opponent twice in the first and once in the second.

Gombos broke early in the third to race to a 0-3 lead. But Cilic got the break back later in the set, only to see the Slovak break again and extend the match by a set. Neither of the two players dropped serve in the fourth set, which ended with a tiebreaker. Cilic saved a set point in the tiebreak and then sealed the match for a 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (8-6) victory.

In the two-hour-and-42-minute contest, Cilic served 20 aces, hit 46 winners and made 51 unforced errors. He won 51 of 59 points on the back of his first delivery and converted four of eight break points in the match.

Rublev v Cilic Prediction and Tip

Both players are in top form but Rublev has dominated this rivalry and will be a favourite to advance. However, the vastly experienced Cilic has a far better record in majors than the younger pro and can be a difficult player to beat. Expect an exciting contest with Rublev edging past Cilic in a thriller.

Tip: Rublev to win AND Both players to win a set: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
