Taylor Fritz v Roberto Bautista-Agut Head to Head

The pair have played each before six times before, and Fritz’s solitary win came on the clay of Lyon in 2019.

That was preceded by victories for the Spaniard at the Shanghai Masters in 2016, and at the Winston-Salem Open the following year, and succeeded by wins at Roland Garros and Halle in 2019, and at the Monte Carlo Masters last year.

Fritz Makes Third Round Again

This is the fourth successive year that Fritz has made the third round in Melbourne, although he has yet to go further.

Not having dropped a set so far, he will be hoping that this year things will be different.

He began with a first round meeting with the German qualifier, Maximilian Marterer, the world number 228, and, after surviving a first set tie-break in which he had to save two set points, he took control of the match, secure on his own serve, and breaking his opponent twice in each of the second and third sets.

His second round opponent was a familiar face in the form of compatriot Frances Tiafoe, the world number 34, but what looked like to be a tough match on paper proved comparatively straightforward for Fritz.

Having saved five break points on his own serve, he broke Tiafoe, only to immediately drop his own serve. It was then Tiafoe’s turn to save break points but his reprieve was temporary as he was broken when serving to stay in the first et.

One break of serve was all that Fritz needed to strengthen his hand by taking the second set as well.

And, when Tiafoe was broken again at the start of the third set the match seemed as good as over. To Tiafoe’s credit though, he fought back and levelled things up, after saving a match point.

The let-off, though, was short-lived as he lost the resulting tie-break.

Bautista-Agut Hoping for an Extended Run

Bautista-Agut made the quarter-finals in Melbourne three years ago, and has reached the fourth round on a further two occasions,  and is hoping now for another extended run in the tournament.

His first round victory over the Italian clay court player Stefano Travaglia, the world number 98, was not without its difficulties, especially when, having taken the first two sets, he was pegged back by dropping the third. However, he was able to stretch away again in the fourth to close out the match.

In the second round he played one of the veterans of the ATP tour, Philipp Kohlschreiber of German, and who, at the age of 38, is now ranked 124th in the world.

The first two sets were a canter for the Spaniard, who dropped only one game over the course of them as he absolutely dominated.

The German made a better fist of it in the third set, and did at least hold his serve several times, but was not able to lay a glove on the Spaniard, and, inevitably, was broken again. One more break gave Bautista-Agut the match.

Fritz v Bautista-Agut Prediction and Tip

Given Bautista-Agut has such a strong head-to-head record between the two, and the American’s one victory against him was achieved on clay, it is difficult to see beyond another win for the Spaniard.
