Felix Auger-Aliassime v Dans Evans Head to Head

The pair have played each other once before, a year ago in the final of the Melbourne warm-up event, the Murray River Open, Evans winning in straight sets.

Auger-Aliassime Fights His Way Through

Aliassime has earned the reputation of being the nearly man of men’s tennis, having been in eight ATP finals since 2019 and lost the lot, including that defeat to Evans last year in Melbourne.

Still, he has a strong recent record in Grand Slams, having reached, last year, the fourth round here, the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the semi-finals of the US Open.

And, after helping Canada win the ATP Cup recently, there may be better things in store for the Canadian in 2022.

There was one stage though, in his first round match with Emil Ruusuvouri of Finland, the world number 90, when he was staring a shock early exit in the face.

Augur-Aliassime had won the first set, but Ruusuvouri took the second without dropping a game and when he also claimed the third, a shock seemed on the cards. However, the Canadian was able to regroup and win the next two to progress.

Nor did he find things any easier in the second round against the Spanish clay court player, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the world number 50.

Augur-Aliassime was the first to drop his serve, recovered the break, and then won the subsequent tie-break to take the first set.

With no break points on offer in the second set to either man, it went to another tie-break, and this time the Spaniard claimed it to level the match.

Serve continued to dominate in the third serve and, although both men had break opportunities, they were not able to make the most of them. That meant another tie-break and after Augur Aliassime had three set points saved, he made the fourth count.

The fourth set saw the Canadian drop his serve, only to hit back straight away with a  break of his own.

Almost inevitably it went to yet another tie-break and, having earned two match points, he was able to convert the second of them.

Evans Enjoys His Day Off

Whilst his fellow competitors in his half of the draw were busy playing in their various matches, Evans had the luxury of a day off, benefitting from a walkover after his second round opponent Arthur Rinderknech of France, had to pull out of the tournament with an injury.

And that means he has reached the third round of this Grand Slam for the first time in his career.

Evans, a semi-finalist in Sydney last week, had begun his latest campaign with a  convincing won over David Goffin of Belgium, a former top ten player, but who has now seen his ranking drop to 45 in the world.

One break of serve gave the Englishman the first set, and the odd break in three the second.

By then Goffin’s resistance was broken and the third set was claimed without the loss of a single game.

Auger-Aliassime v Evans Prediction and Tip

Although Augur-Aliassime is the higher ranked player, he has had two tough matches in Melbourne so far, whereas Evans was barely extended in the one match he played, and will have enjoyed more rest. And the fact that the one previous meeting between the two took place in Melbourne a year ago, and Evans won it, may just mean he has both the psychological and the physical edge.
