Clara Tauson v Danielle Collins Head to Head

The upcoming match will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour. They last met in the 2020 French Open where Collins prevailed 6-2, 6-3.

Tauson’s Moment may be Here

A little over two years ago, 19-year-old Clara Tauson was ranking in the mid 200s. Now, she is the World No. 39 (a career-best for her) and by the looks of it, is set to move up even further.

She sent a strong message to the rest of the field in Melbourne when she knocked out the Estonian sensation Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-4. Tauson was absolutely clinical in that match – much like her opening-round win over Astra Sharma, committing just 13 unforced errors and striking 20 winners. The Danish also enjoyed a good service game, winning 73% of the points on the first go.

To put this win into perspective, Kontaveit had reached the semifinal in her last four tournaments before the major, going the distance in two of those and settling for the runner-up trophy in another.

This performance is certainly not surprising for a player like Tauson. If anything, it was just a matter of time.

2021 was a breakthrough year for the Danish – she won two ITF titles, two WTA titles, a Challenger trophy, and a finalist feat. Tauson also enjoyed a decent start to the season, having reached the quarterfinal in Melbourne 2.

Collins Hopeful of another Deep Run

In 2019, Danielle Collins left her mark on the tour by reaching the semifinal in the Australian Open. Three years later, she is hopeful to do it again. Her last two attempts haven’t been that great – the American was beaten in the second round.

But with straight-set wins over Caroline Dolehide and Ana Konjuh this edition, she has developed a bit of rhythm to her game. Collins has been just as efficient as her upcoming opponent, keeping the errors on the low side and boasting a solid serve.

The 28-year-old didn’t feature in any tune-up events this month and the lack of practice may just cost her against Tauson. While she is certainly experienced and is coming off a decent 2021 spell – one WTA 250 and one WTA 500 title – Collins may have to work hard to earn the win.

Tauson v Collins Prediction and Tip

Tauson has the wind in her sails and is confident after carving the number six upset. She will now set her sights on the #27 seed, who will be playing in just her third match of the season, in a high-pressure tournament like the Aus Open.

This will be a cracker of a game that can swing either way.
