Tamara Zidansek has made a bit of personal history in the Australian Open by making it to the third round for the first time in her career.
In the opener, she defeated Arantxa Rus in a three-set slogfest and followed it with a 7-6(4), 6-4 win over Heather Watson. That match against the Brit could have swung either way but Zidansek was persistent and won the crucial points with a 74% first-serve win rate.
Currently ranked World No. 29 – her best singles ranking yet – the Slovenian enjoyed a good build-up to the season. Zidansek was a semifinalist in Adelaide 2 while the week before in Adelaide 1, she lost to Maria Sakkari after a gruelling battle of 2-6, 6-0, 4-6. Serving a single bagel to a top 10 player is certainly an impressive feat for the 24-year-old.
Zidansek enjoyed a good run last season by winning the Swiss Open, reaching the final in Copa Colsanitas, and the semis in the French Open.

Cornet Stuns Muguruza
World No. 61 Alize Cornet is just one win away from reaching the fourth round in the Australian Open – a feat she last achieved in 2009.
So far in Melbourne this season, the Frenchwoman has beaten both of her opponents with the exact score of 6-3, 6-3 – Viktoriya Tomova and Garbine Muguruza. It is worth noting that Muguruza committed twice as many unforced errors than Cornet (33 vs 16), despite hitting the same number of winners. If the Spaniard were in form, she could have just as easily lost the match.
After all, the 31-year-old arrived for the competition on the back of a two-match losing streak incurred in the season buildup. A majority of her previous season was along similar lines, dotted with early-round exits. The exceptions here would be her semifinal run in Tenerife and Berlin and the runner-up trophy from WTA 250 Chicago.
Zidansek v Cornet Prediction and Tip
If there was a time for Zidansek to strike, this would be it. Cornet, while experienced, isn’t coming off the best of runs while Zidansek is clinical and playing some quality tennis. This may not be an easy battle but the Slovenian should ultimately come out on the top.
