Sinner Outclasses Johnson

Jannik Sinner is off to a flying start in Melbourne. A couple of days after breezing past lucky loser Joao Sousa in the first round, the 20-year-old Italian outclassed American Steve Johnson in the second round on Thursday to reach the Round of 32 for the first time at the Australian Open.

Yet to drop a set this year, Sinner who went 3-0 at the ATP Cup, extended his 2022 record to 5-0 on Thursday.

It was all one-way traffic in the first set as the Italian took a sizeable 4-0 lead before Johnson got on the board. Sinner dropped just two points on his serve in the first set to win it in 26 minutes.

The Italian failed to convert a break point in the fifth game of the second set, but did convert a second one in the ninth game to go 5-4 up and then served out the second set to take a 2-0 lead.

Sinner began the third set with a break of serve. He faced the only break point of the match in the fourth game of the third set but he was equal to his task. He would break once again in the final game of the set to take the contest 6-2, 6-4, 6-3.

With four titles and a runner-up finish in his maiden ATP 1000 final in Miami, Sinner enjoyed an extremely successful 2021 season that also saw him break into the top 10, and peak to No. 9 in the rankings.

Currently ranked No. 10 in the world, the 2020 French Open quarterfinalist began his Australian Open campaign with a 6-4, 7-5, 6-1 win over Sousa.

Daniel Ends Murray’s Campaign

Taro Daniel’s impressive run at the Australian Open continued as the Japanese player marched into the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career with a straight sets win over Andy Murray on Thursday.

The former No. 1, Murray, who won a five-set thriller against Nikoloz Basilashvili on his Australian Open return after a gap of two years, didn’t get going against Taro.

The Japanese fired 12 aces and won 79% points on the first serve. He struck 46 winners against Murray’s 38 and made just 21 unforced errors to Murray’s 49 to clinch the two-hour-and-48-minute contest 6-4, 6-4, 6-4.

Ranked No. 120 in the world, Taro has come through the qualifiers. He didn’t drop a set in his qualifying round wins over Italians Andrea Arnaboldi, Gian Marco Moroni and Salvatore Caruso.

He continued the trend in the first round, defeating Chile’s Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, 6-1.

Can the 28-year-old keep the stunning form going in the third round?
