Elise Mertens has made up for her early exit in Sydney last week by delivering a good performance in the Melbourne Slam.
Starting with Vera Zvonareva in round one, the Belgian moved on to knock out Irina-Camelia Begu 6-3, 6-2. That match lasted for just 77 minutes and saw Mertens win 76% of her first-service rallies and make just 15 unforced errors. Another win here and she will have made it to the fourth round for the third consecutive year.
The 26-year-old had a bleak 2021 season, at least as a singles player. She won the Gippsland Trophy and was a runner-up in the Istanbul Cup. Eventually, the current World No. 26 reached the mid-rounds in French Open, US Open, and Wimbledon.
On the doubles circuit, she won two of the four majors along with reaching the final at the WTA Finals with Su-Wei Hsieh.
Overall, Mertens has an enviable pedigree and is a formidable opponent. She is experienced and should do well against Zhang.

Zhang Survives Rybakina
Shuai Zhang played Elena Rybakina in the second round here and benefited from an early withdrawal. She took the first set 6-4 before the Kazakh retired from the match in the second set.
Ranked #74 at the moment, it is in the ongoing Grand Slam that Zhang snapped her four-match losing streak. Her opening-round win over Viktorija Golubic was her first one since the end of the last season.
The 32-year-old is an established doubles player, much like Mertens. Last year, Zhang won the US Open and Cincinnati Open with Samantha Stosur and Ostrava Open with Sania Mirza. On the singles circuit, she was a finalist in the Nottingham Open.
However, when compared to Mertens, she isn’t that great of a singles player. Her tally last season was 16-24 while the Belgian was at 32-19.
Mertens v Zhang Prediction and Tip
The number 19 seed is the odds-on favourite. She has everything going on for her at the moment while Zhang may just be riding her luck. This may not be a one-sided affair but Mertens should come out on the top.
