Halep in a Terrific Form

After battling with injuries and the subsequent drop in form for the better part of last season, World No. 15 Simona Halep is finally back on track.

In the Australian Open so far – a tournament where she has reached the final, semifinal, and quarterfinal in her last four appearances – the Romanian is yet to drop a set. In fact, with the early exits of Garbine Muguruza and Anett Kontaveit, her path to the semifinals just got clearer.

After defeating Magdalena Frech in the opener, Halep routed Beatriz Haddad Maia 6-2, 6-0 in a little over an hour. The 30-year-old doled out 15 winners, 12 unforced errors, and won 77% of the points on the first serve.

Halep also enjoyed a good buildup to the Slam, having won the Melbourne Set 1 a couple of weeks ago. As a former World No. 1, Halep’s pedigree is enviable with five major finals and 36 WTA career finals.

Kovinic with her Best Results in Melbourne

World No. 98 Danka Kovinic is having quite a Grand Slam. By making it to the third round here, she has posted her best performance in a major.

Her victims include the South Korean Jang Su-Jeong (6-3, 2-6, 6-4) and the reigning US Open champion Emma Raducanu. The Montenegran took the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, in two and a half hours. Raducanu played some formidable tennis but Kovinic managed to outperform the Brit with 40 winners and saving nine out of 15 breakpoints.

The 27-year-old incurred a string of poor results in the opening weeks of the season. She lost in the qualifiers of Melbourne Set 1 while in Adelaide 2, she succumbed to Maddison Inglis in the first round.

These early-round exits best describe her overall form these last couple of seasons. Except for the runner-up and semifinal feats in Charleston last year, Kovinic hasn’t really had a deep run on the tour.

Halep v Kovinic Prediction and Tip
