Badosa Survives A Scare

World No. 6 Paula Badosa thwarted a valiant comeback effort from Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career.

With the win, Badosa extended her winning streak to eight matches. She came into the tournament as Sydney International champion—her third WTA title.

Friday’s match started with three consecutive breaks of serve with Badosa getting two of those. She further solidified her position in the set with a third break of serve and eventually claimed the set in 34 minuets.

With an early break in the second, the Spaniard was cruising towards a win as she built a 4-2 lead, but Kostyuk wasn’t going down without a fight and the World no. 66 fought back with two breaks to force the third set.

In what turned out to be a thrilling third set, Kostyuk fought back from a break down twice in the first six games, but Badosa broke again to restore advantage in the seventh game. The eighth seed had two match points on Kostyuk’s serve at 5-3 but the Ukrainian saved both to stay alive.

Serving for the match in the next game, Badosa was up 40-15, but the Ukrainian refused to surrender, and saved both the match points. A point later Badosa had a third match point in the game and she finally converted it to heave a sigh of relief. The 6-2, 5-6, 6-4 win came in two hours and 19 minutes.

It was the toughest match that Badosa has played in the tournament so far. She beat Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic 6-4, 6-0 in the first round and then raced to a 6-0, 6-3 win over Italy’s Martina Trevisan in the second round.

Keys Comes Back to Down Wang

Following a dismal 2021, Madison Keys is off to a flying start in 2022 and she just keeps getting better.

On Friday, the 2015 Australian Open semifinalist rallied from a set down to overpower China’s Wang Qiang and book a place in the fourth round of the Melbourne Slam for the fifth time in her career.

Ranked 51 in the world, the 26-year-old didn’t match up to the Chinese player in the first set, getting just one break to Wang’s two. She came back well in the second, breaking Wang on three occasions, while getting broken just twice in the set.

Neither could hold serve in the first four games of an extremely competitive third set, which needed a tiebreak to separate the two. Keys dominated the tiebreak taking an 8-0 lead before Wang could get on the board, but the deficit was too much for the Chinese to overturn and the American extended her winning streak to eight matches. She has come into the tournament on the back of title success in Adelaide—the sixth title of her career.

Keys continued her winning form at the Australian Open, defeating 2020 champion Sofia Kenin 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 in the first round and Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian 6-2, 7-5 in the second.

Badosa v Keys Prediction and Tip

Both have had a similar run up to the fourth round. Expect them to be engaged in another three-setter. There is little to choose between the two but the way Badosa has been playing for over an yer now, she will have a slight edge over Keys.
