Danielle Collins v Elise Mertens Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, and the head to head record is one win apiece.

In 2018 Mertens was the winner at Wimbledon, but Collins avenged that loss in Chicago last year.

Both matches were won in  straight sets.

Collins Comes from Behind to Beat Danish Teenager

The 2019 semi-finalist, Collins had been barely troubled in her first two matches in Melbourne this year, brushing aside the American qualifier Caroline Dolehide, and then holding off the challenge of the Croatian Ana Konjuh.

Danish teenager, Clara Tauson, the world number 39, proved to be altogether a different proposition.

The American began strongly, breaking the Dane in  her opening service game. What was not in the script, as far as Collins was concerned, was that she would be broken in turn and then yet again, as Tauson claimed the first set.

And, when she dropped her serve again early in the second set, defeat seemed on the cards. However, Collins used her experience to stay in the match, got the break back and then broke once more to level things up.

Collins saved break points early in the third set, before she held three match points on the teenager’s serve. They were all saved, but, when another opportunity came her way two games later, she duly converted it.

Mertens Hoping to Recapture Form

Mertens has a good record in Melbourne. She won the doubles title last year with Arnya Sabalenka, and this is the fourth time she has made the fourth round in the singles, her run to the semi-finals in  2018 her best performance yet at a Grand Slam.

And, so far, her progress in the tournament has been largely serene, beating first the Russian veteran Vera Zvonareva, and then Irina Begu of Romania, both in straight sets, to earn herself a third round tie with Shuai Zhang of China, the world number 74.

The Belgian was on top from the start, breaking  Zhang in the opening service game of the match, and then again. A dropped Mertens serve gave the Chinese woman brief hope, but she was broken once more as Mertens cruised to take the first set.

Zhang dropped her serve at the start of the second set and then midway through it, and, from there, the outcome was inevitable. Zhang did save a match point, but the reprieve was only temporary as Mertens sealed the match in the next game.

Collins v Mertens Prediction and Tip

The two former semi-finalists would appear to be very evenly matched, so this could go either way, and it is likely that there will be three sets in it.
