Medvedev Eases Into the Fourth Round
Irked by the Aussie crowd booing him during his second round win over local favourite Nick Kyrgios, Daniil Medvedev had it easy in the third round playing against a Dutch player on Saturday as the World No. 2 breezed past Botic Van de Zandschulp to enter the fourth round of the Melbourne major for the fourth consecutive time.
In what was a fine service display by the Russian, he needed just an hour and 57 minutes to dispatch the World No. 57, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2.
Medvedev, who served 10 aces in the match, got 66% of his first serve in and won 82% of those points. Van de Zandschulp had three break point opportunities but the second seed saved all three of them. Medvedev was also solid on return, winning 40% return points and converting 4 of 11 break points.
Runner-up to Novak Djokovic last year, Medvedev began his 2022 Australian Open campaign with a 6-1, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) win over Switzerland’s Henri Laaksonen in the first round. He then overcame Nick Kyrgios in a high-intensity second round clash. Medvedev served 31 aces to Kyrgios’ 17 before ousting the Australian 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.
He was extremely disappointed with the crowd booing him between the first and second serves at the Rod Laver arena on Thursday, and he made that clear during his on-court interview with Jim Courier.
But he was all smiles after Saturday’s win, saying “I’ll put it this way: It’s easier to play a guy from Netherlands than a guy from Australia in Melbourne.”
Speaking of his relationship with the crowd he said, “Every good relationship must have it’s ups and downs [that makes it] more real. Hopefully I can come here many more years and as I said I don’t think there would be only good ones but I hope it’s going to be more good times than bad times, otherwise it doesn’t work.”

Cressy Continues to Impress
Off to a dream start in 2022, the year just keeps getting better for America’s Maxime Cressy.
The World No. 70 picked his ninth win of the season to enter the fourth round of Australian Open on Saturday. The 24-year-old, who had never gone past the second round of a Grand Slam, has been impressive in just his second Australian Open campaign, which began with an epic five-set round of No. 22 seed John Isner in the first round.
Cressy followed it up with a four-set win over the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac and on Saturday dumped out local hope Christopher O’Connell, also in four.
The big-serving American, who fired 31 aces against Isner and 18 against Machac, struck 28 against O’Connell to score a 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 6-2 win.
Cressy, who needed four hours and 10 minutes to win his opening round match 7-6 (7-2), 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, struck 71 winners to 21 unforced errors against O’Connell and broke the Aussie five times in the match while saving all three of the break points that he faced.
Cressy began the season by reaching the final in Melbourne and the quarterfinals in Sydney. Can he keep the dream run going with a surprise win on Monday?
