Tsitsipas Holds Off Paire

World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas held off the mercurial Benoit Paire on Saturday to go past the third round of the Australian Open for the third time in five years.

A semifinalist at the Melbourne major in 2019 and 20121, Tsitsipas didn’t lose a service game against the Frenchman on Saturday but converted three of 11 break points for a 6-3, 7-5, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4 win in two hours and 42 minutes.

Winning 89% of first serve points, Tsitsipas fired in 21 aces to Paire’s 11 and struck 47 winners and 26 unforced errors against the Frenchman’s 39 winners and 50 unforced errors.

It was the second time in the tournament when the 23-year-old Greek dropped a set. Beginning the campaign with a convincing 6-2, 6-4, 6-3 rout of Sweden’s Mikael Ymer, Tsitsipas had to sweat it out against Sebastian Baez in the second round, needing three hours and 22 minutes to battle past the Argentine 7-6 (7-1), 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 6-4.

There were questions about the fitness of the 2021 French Open finalist before the start of the tournament, as he needed an elbow surgery in the off season and didn’t have much impact at the ATP Cup, losing to Diego Schwartzman and withdrawing after just five games against Nikoloz Basilashvili.

But he seems to be getting better with each match at the Australian Open and looks set for another deep run in the tournament.

Fritz Fends Off Bautista Agut

After beginning the tournament with back-to-back straight-set wins, Taylor Fritz edged past No. 15 seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round on Saturday to enter the fourth round of a major for the first time in his career.

The 24-year-old American, who was 1-5 against Bautista Agut from their six previous meetings, closed the gap on the Spaniard with a 6-0, 3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

Ranked No. 22nd in the world, Fritz struck 19 aces and 73 winners more than double the 35 winners struck by the Spaniard. He also made four unforced errors fewer than his opponent’s 47.

Fritz held 19 break points in the match and he converted 10 of them. Bautista Agut, meanwhile held 13 breaking opportunities but he could convert just seven of them.

The American, who was knocked out of the third round in Melbourne the previous three years, had begun his 2022 campaign with a 7-6 (10-8), 6-3, 6-2 victory over Germany’s Maximilian Marterer. In the second round, Fritz knocked out compatriot Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

Saturday’s win improved him to 5-1 in 2022. He had a 2-1 record at the ATP Cup.
