Aryna Sabalenka v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head

The pair have met just once on the WTA Tour, in the 2021 Gippsland Trophy. Kanepi took that match in three sets to eventually reach the final and settle for the runner-up trophy.

Sabalenka Continues her Slow Start

After back to back opening-round losses at the start of the 2022 season, Aryna Sabalenka is finally registering some wins although, they haven’t been half as clinical as you would expect of her.

All three of her matches so far in the Australian Open have gone to three sets. More notably, they start with the Belarusian losing the first set and then staging a comeback to win the match. It was the case against Storm Sanders, 20-year-old Chinese Xinyu Wang, and most recently, the 31st seed Marketa Vondrousova.

Sabalenka defeated Vondrousova 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 in an hour and 49 minutes. That match too displayed a recurring theme from the number two seed of committing more unforced errors than her opponents – it was 36 against the Czech, 43 against Wang, and 37 against Sanders. While we are at it, she has been committing far too many unforced errors too.

The 23-year-old is certainly not at her best at the moment as she continues to fumble her way through the Slam. The two-time Grand Slam semifinalist will need to up her game drastically if she wants to reach the quarters – something that Sabalenka has never achieved in Melbourne.

Kanepi Enjoying her Resurgence

36-year-old Kaia Kanepi is enjoying a great run in the Australian Open as she looks to leave her mark on the tour once again. She was the World No. 15 back in 2012 and since then, has spent her time on the tour in trying to recapture the former glory.

She is currently ranked #115 and had never made it to the fourth round in the Slam, at least until now.

Kanepi has had a good week where she has played some brilliant tennis against the likes of Angelique Kerber (a former World No. 1 and Grand Slam winner) and Marie Bouzkova. She won both these matches in straight sets before battling the local favourite Maddison Inglis for three sets.

The Estonian won that match 2-6, 6-2, 6-0 with a beautiful service game (85% of the points on the first serve won) and some solid power.

Needless to say, Kanepi hasn’t had a run like this in what seems now an eternity – but she has been preparing for it. In the closing moments of last season, she won the ITF titles in Parnu and Texas to get some wind in her sails.

Sabalenka v Kanepi Prediction and Tip

Given Sabalenka’s shaky form, an upset is certainly on the cards here. At 12/5, Kanepi makes for an attractive bet and in all likelihood, her chances of winning aren’t that bad either.

Expect a good game of tennis from two heavy hitters.
