Simona Halep v Alize Cornet Head to Head

Between the two, it is surprisingly Cornet who leads Halep by 3-1. That said, they haven’t played a professional match of tennis since the 2015 Madrid Open.

Halep Finds her Groove

Simona Halep has quite an impressive record at the Australian Open – a runner-up here in 2018, fourth-round in 2019, semifinal in 2020, and quarterfinal last season.

By the looks of it, she is set to build on these records further. After battling with injuries and form woes for most of the last season – the occurrences which led to her dropping out of the top five for the first time since 2013 – Halep is back in action and she means business.

The current World No. 15 started the season with a title run in Melbourne Set 1, beating Veronika Kudermetova in the final. With that momentum, the 30-year-old head for the Melbourne Slam where, so far, she hasn’t dropped a set. In fact, she is averaging at just four games lost per match.

In the opener, Halep knocked out Magdalena Frech 6-4, 6-3, and followed it with a whitewash of Beatriz Haddad Maia with 6-2, 6-0. Next, she played Danka Kovinic and sailed through with 6-2, 6-1.

The Romanian has looked confident and is in a good place (in her own words) – which is all you can ask for in these crucial stages. As a former world number one with a trophy collection spanning across 41 WTA career finals, Halep is well-positioned for a deep run here.

Cornet Celebrates her Birthday in Style

Alize Cornet celebrated her 32nd birthday on Saturday with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Tamara Zidansek. After her third-round win, the entire Margaret Arena Court sang the birthday song for the Frenchwoman.

Buoyed by that heart-warming event and her heroics in the Australian Open, Cornet is as ready as she can be for the encounter with Halep. The current World No. 61 has made it this far only one in her career – in 2009 – and if she overcomes the Romanian, she will have made it to her maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Contrary to her recent form and overall career, there is cause to be optimistic that Cornet can carve this upset. After defeating Viktoriya Tomova in the first round of the Slam, she knocked out the number three seed, the WTA Finals champion Garbine Muguruza with 6-3, 6-3.

Interestingly, Cornet arrived for the Aus Open on the back of a two-match losing streak. Last season, the best she could entail was a runner-up feat in WTA 250 Chicago and a couple of semifinal appearances in Berlin and Tenerife.

Halep v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Halep will start as the heavy favourite here. She has everything going on for her at the moment and short of a miraculous performance from Cornet, she should do well to reach the quarters.
