Nadal Into 14th Australian Open QF

Rafael Nadal continued his march towards a 21st Grand Slam title, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open for the 14th time with a straight sets win over Adrian Mannarino on Sunday.

Straight sets it may be, but it took the former No. 1 two hours and 40 minutes to get to the win, thanks to a roller-coaster first-set tiebreak, which Nadal won in close to 30 minutes. The World No. 5 saved four set points in the tiebreak, and squandered six of them before converting his seventh to take the tiebreak 16-14.

Having edged the first set in an hour and 22 minutes, Nadal took control of the match. He dropped just two points on his serve in the second set and broke Mannarino twice to go two sets up. Both traded a break early in the third, but Nadal broke twice again to build a 5-1 lead and eventually closed out the match 7-6 (16-14), 6-2, 6-2.

Nadal had warmed up for the first major of the year by winning the Melbourne Summer Set title. Sunday’s win improved him to 7-0 in 2022.

The 2009 Australian Open champion began his 2022 challenge with a straight sets win over America’s Marcos Giron. He continued his solid run in the second round dumping out Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Having won the first two rounds without dropping a service game, Nadal faced some resistance in the third round against Olympics silver medallist Karen Khachanov. The Russian took a set off Nadal yet the Spaniard won 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Nadal finished runner-up for a fourth time at the Australian Open in 2019. Since then he has lost in the quarterfinals twice. In 2020, it was Dominic Thiem who knocked him out at the last eight stage and last year, he went down in five to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Will he cross the last eight hurdle this year?

Shapovalov Stuns Zverev

Denis Shapovalov powered past third seed Alexander Zverev to reach the quarterfinals of the Melbourne major for the first time in his career.

The 22-year-old Canadian got the only break of the first set and then won an up-and-down second set in the tiebreak. Both players broke each other twice leading up to the tiebreak, which produced more thrills before Shapovalov won 7-5. The Canadian broke early in the third set as well and then maintained the lead to wrap up the two-hour-and-21-minute contest 6-3, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3.

Ranked No. 14, Shapovalov led Canada to the ATP Cup title earlier this month, finishing the tournament with a 3-1 record.

Shapovalov’s win over Zverev was his quickest of the tournament so far. He began his campaign with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Laslo Djere in a three-hour-and-23-minute first round contest. He needed four hours and 25 minutes to win his second round match against Korea’s Soonwoo Kwon. Shapovalov struck 81 winners, including 29 aces to beat the Korean 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (3-7), 6-7 (6-8), 7-5, 6-2.

He was involved in a third three-hour-plus contest as he held off the big-serving Reilly Opelka 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the Australian open for the firs time in his career.

On Sunday, Shapovalov struck 35 winners to Zverev’s 18. He was also solid from the net, winning 22 of 27 net points.

Nadal v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

It’s a battle between to left-handers, who have started the season in top form. While Shapovalov did extremely well to oust Zverev in the fourth round, it will be a huge ask for him to win in the quarterfinals. Nadal will be the favourite to win and advance to a seventh semifinal in Melbourne.
