Ashleigh Barty v Jessica Pegula Head to Head

This will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour. Barty won that second-round bout in the 2019 French Open, beating Pegula 6-3, 6-3, en route to her maiden Grand Slam.

Barty Schools Anisimova

Local favourite Ashleigh Barty stormed into the quarterfinal of the 2022 Australian Open in style, beating Amanda Anisimova 6-4, 6-3. That match was certainly more challenging than the rest of her previous affairs so far – seeing that the Aussie was broken on the serve for the first time this tournament.

Nonetheless, Barty bounced back just as quickly and broke Anisimova in the next game to get back on even terms in the second set. From that point on, it was yet another smooth, efficient sailing from the top seed.

Barty has not dropped a set yet in Melbourne this season. In the opening rounds, she knocked out the likes of Lesia Tsurenko, Lucia Bronzetti, and Camila Giorgi while losing just eight games (five of which came against Giorgi).

This is the third successive time that Barty has made it to the quarterfinal in this particular major. Three more wins and she becomes the first Australian since Chris O’Neil to win the home Slam since 1978.

It goes without saying that her prospects of doing so are far too good. Barty ended last year as the World No. 1 again – for the third consecutive season. The reigning Wimbledon champion ended the year with an astonishing 84% win rate (42-8).

This year, she is already at 8-0, including her title run in Adelaide 1 earlier this month. She is in brilliant form, coming off a great run, and has the local support.

Another Consistent Run by Pegula

Number 21 seed Jessica Pegula made her way to the quarters after knocking out the fifth-seeded Greek Maria Sakkari with 7-6(0), 6-3. The match lasted for a little over 90 minutes and saw the American play some remarkable tennis to outsmart Sakkari.

With this, Pegula has reached yet another quarterfinal on the tour. The 27-year-old reached the same stage last season in Melbourne, in addition to making it this far in the Indian Wells Open, Italian Open, Canadian Open, and WTA Dubai. On the back of this consistency, Pegula scaled her way into the top 20 from the early 60s.

The World No. 21 started the year on a disappointing note with consecutive first-round losses in Melbourne 2 and Sydney. In the Slam, however, she has made up for it brilliantly.

After surviving a three-set hiccup against Anhelina Kalinina in round one, Pegula knocked out Bernarda Pera and Nuria Parrizas Diaz in straight sets.

Barty v Pegula Prediction and Tip

Pegula will put up a fight but this seems more like Barty’s tournament to lose. The American is a promising player but she lacks the kind of exposure Barty has when it comes to playing in high-pressure matches during these premier events.
