Iga Swiatek v Kaia Kanepi Head to Head
This will be their first meeting on the WTA Tour.

Kanepi Stuns Sabalenka
Kaia Kanepi is heading in this match after stunning the number two seed Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round with 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(10). The match lasted for a little over two hours and saw the Estonian capitalise on Sabalenka’s shaky game and high unforced errors.
The third set was admittedly quite close but Kanepi kept her calm and prevailed after winning the crucial points.
Earlier in the tournament, the 36-year-old had also knocked out the former World No. 1 Angelique Kerber in straight sets. She followed that result with comfortable wins over Marie Bouzkova and Maddison Inglis.
Kanepi has been featuring in Grand Slams since 2002 – by contrast, Swiatek started playing in majors only in 2019. In these three decades, the World No. 115 has reached the quarterfinal only seven times. This is also the first time that she has made it this far in the Melbourne major.
The tennis veteran is hoping to build on a decent 2021 spell which saw her reach her first WTA final since 2013. Following that runner-up feat in the Gippsland Trophy, Kanepi later won the ITF titles in Parnu and Texas.
As for her form this season, she featured only in Melbourne 1 where she fell to Ana Konjuh in round two.

Swiatek Survives Cirstea
After winning her opening three matches in straight sets, Iga Swiatek was challenged in the fourth round by Sorana Cirstea. The experienced Romanian put up a solid fight but ultimately, it was the Pole who took the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. Swiatek enjoyed a good first service game, winning 76% of the points on the first attempt.
Following that win, the 20-year-old has reached her third Grand Slam quarterfinal – her first in the Aus Open.
Swiatek’s other victims in the tournament include Harriet Dart, Rebecca Peterson, and Daria Kasatkina. The World No. 9 also enjoyed a decent start to the season with a semifinal run in Adelaide International 1.
She enjoyed a spectacular season last year, having won the titles in Adelaide and the Italian Open. Swiatek also reached the fourth round at the very least in all four majors and ended the year with a debut in the WTA Finals.
Swiatek v Kanepi Prediction and Tip
The 2020 French Open champion is obviously a strong contender for the ongoing Slam but lacks experience – something which Kanepi has in abundance.
The Estonian is also in fine form and is known to be one of the strongest servers on the WTA Tour. If she can emulate the same performance from the Sabalenka bout, there is no reason why she cannot defeat Swiatek.
