Iga Swiatek v Danielle Collins Head to Head

This will be their second meeting on the WTA Tour, with the first one taking place in the 2021 Adelaide 500. Swiatek won that match although, Collins retired in the second set trailing 2-6, 0-3.

Collins Halts Cornet’s Dream run

Danielle Collins made it to her second semifinal in the Australian Open after dispatching Alize Cornet 7-5, 6-1, in an hour and 30 minutes. The American committed far too many unforced errors (29 to Cornet’s 17) but on the back of a 90% first-service win rate and 28 winners, she sailed through.

The 28-year-old has beaten a handful of impressive names in the tournament so far which includes Elise Mertens and Clara Tauson in three sets. It is worth noting that the level of her game wasn’t that great in those matches, having committed a massive 74 unforced errors.

The current World No. 30 was much more clinical in her opening-round matches against Caroline Dolehide and Ana Konjuh.

Nonetheless, a win is a win and she is now just one step away from reaching her first Grand Slam final. It is certainly an impressive feat, given that Collins did not play in any tune-up events before coming to Melbourne.

Last year, she picked up two WTA titles and ended the year with a tally of 40-15. She is no stranger to picking up wins against the top 10 players and is well-equipped to take on Swiatek.

Swiatek Survives Kanepi

Number seven seed Iga Swiatek was tested in her quarterfinal bout against Kaia Kanepi. That marathon match lasted for an astonishing three hours which ultimately saw the Pole win with 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-3. It was a close game by all means; Swiatek committed 50 unforced errors and had just 31 winners but managed to escape the veteran Estonian owing to her energy and endurance.

This was also the second three-setter for the 20-year-old in Melbourne. Before taking on Kanepi, she was in a similar slogfest against Sorana Cirstea in the fourth round. In two and a half hours, Swiatek won with 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 where, once again, her errors count were on the higher end.

In the preceding rounds, however, the World No. 9 didn’t face that many difficulties as she moved past the likes of Harriet Dart, Rebecca Peterson, and Daria Kasatkina in straight sets.

A semifinalist in Adelaide 1 this season, Swiatek is already 8-1 in 2022 as she looks to build on her stellar spell last season. In 2021, she won the titles in Adelaide and Rome, in addition to reaching the fourth-round at least in all majors. Swiatek also qualified for the year-end WTA Finals where she lost in the group stage.

Swiatek v Collins Prediction and Tip

Both players are quite similar, making this an evenly-matched affair. They are known for their aggressive style of play and interestingly, have committed their fair share of errors so far in the tournament.

This is more like an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object. Expect this one to go to three sets where Collins may just come out on the top owing to her superior experience.
