Ymer on Two-Match Losing Streak

Lats year, Mikael Ymer had come to Montpelier following an excellent run at the Australian Open, where he reached the third round of a major for the first time in his career before being sent packing by Stefanoss Tsitsipas. This year, the 23-year-old Swede couldn’t get going in Melbourne, falling in the first round to the Greek once again.

He had a decent start to the season though, reaching the quarterfinals in his opening tournament in Adelaide-1. Ymer defeated Benjamin Bonzi and Kwon Soon-woo in the first two rounds respectively but was beaten by Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis in the last eight stage.

This is Ymer’s third main draw appearance at Montpellier. He won his first round match against Jannik Sinner in 2020 but lost to Filip Krajinovic in the Round of 16. Last year, he couldn’t go past the first round, falling to Jiri Vesely in straight sets.

But despite that failure, 2021 proved to be the best year for Ymer so far. He finished the season with an 18-20 record, which included a maiden ATP final in Winston Salem. But he missed out on a chance to claim his first title after being outclassed by Ilya Ivashka. Ymer also reached the third rounds of the Australian Open and the French Open for the first time in his career last year.

Coming into the tournament on the back of two defeats, Ymer would look to avoid extending the losing streak.

Moutet Has Made an Impressive Start

Corentin Moutet is off to an impressive start in 2022. After being forced to withdraw from his second round clash at Adelaide-1, the World No. 100 went on to reach the semifinals of Adelaide-2, before losing to compatriot Arthur Rinderknech.

The 22-year-old left-hander then reached the second round of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year, as he accounted for 2019 semifinalist Lucas Pouille in the first round. But yet again he failed to make a third round debut in Melbourne, this time falling to Sebastian Korda in an epic five-setter in the Round of 64.

A semifinalist at Melbourne-2 in 2021, Moutet had a 12-13 record last year. His best-ever performance on the ATP tour came in January 2020 when he made it to the final of the Qatar Open but couldn’t go all the way to the title, suffering a loss in final against Andrey Rublev.

Moutet, who has time and again been hailed for his fighting spirit, has a 5-3 record this year. The Frenchman had qualified for the Adelaide-2 event and then gone on to reach the semifinals following wins against Jan-Lennard Struff, Márton Fucsovics and Thiago Monteiro.

Into the main draw of Montpellier for the first rime, can he make an impact?

Ymer v Moutet Prediction and Tip

While Ymer was the better player last year, Moutet has been the better of the two this year. Coming into the tournament in solid form, Moutet should win the opener and advance for a second-round meeting with the third seed Gael Monfils, who has a first-round bye.
