David Goffin v Benjamin Bonzi Head to Head

Goffin beat Bonzi in their only meeting in Montpellier last year. The Belgian rallied from a set down to win the Round of 16 contest.

Goffin Begins Title Defence

Last year, David Goffin fought back from a set down to beat Roberto Bautista Agut in the final of the Montpellier Open to capture his fifth career title and a first since 2017.

That tournament was one of only few where Goffin excelled last year. He had begun the year well, also reaching the semifinals in Antalya, but a string of losses, followed by a knee problem brought a pre-mature end to his season. He made nine first-round exits in a 14-15 season.

Having ended 2021 with six losses in a row, Goffin began the 2022 season with another straight sets loss to Alex Molcan in Melbourne. He finally ended the seven-match skid in Sydney, winning the first two rounds against Facundo Bagnis and Denis Kudla respectively to reach the quarterfinals. He was forced to retire with an injury against Andy Murray in the last eight stage.

In Melbourne, the 2017 Australian Open quarterfinalist was demolished by Daniel Evans in the first round, with the Briton winning 6-4, 6-3, 6-0.

Plagued by inconsistency, Goffin would begin his title defence in Montpellier against Benjamin Bonzi. It will be interesting to see if the eighth seed can find form in what has been his happy hunting tournament.

Ranked No. 45th in the world, Goffin made it to the semifinals of the tournament in 2018 and 2020 and claimed the title last year.

Bonzi Is 2-3 This Season

World No. 63 Benjamin Bonzi will be making his second main draw appearance in Montpellier. last year, he stunned fellow countryman Lucas Pouille in the first round but lost to his Monday’s opponent in the Round of 16.

Bonzi was one of the most successful players at the Challenger level last year, reaching seven finals and winning six of those.

The 25-year-old doesn’t have a lot of experience at the Tour level, but after all his successes last year, he is poised to play a lot more at the top level this year. He brings a 2-3 2022 record to the tournament.

Bonzi was beaten by Mikael Ymer in the first round of the season opener in Adelaide-1. He registered his first win of the year in Adelaide-2, beating Spain’s Roberto Carballés Baena in straight sets but was beaten in the next match by Tommy Paul.

Bonzi made his debut at the Australian Open this year and got off to a good start, taming Germany’s Peter Gojowczyk 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round, but suffered a straight sets defeat in the second round against Karen Khachanov.

Goffin v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

Goffin has struggled to win matches on consistent basis in recent times and having suffered a rout in his last match, in Melbourne, he will be under a bit of pressure. Bonzi, meanwhile, will sense an opportunity. Expect a close match with Goffin progressing.
