World No. 96 Peter Gojowczyk is looking to make amends for his rather dismal start to the 2022 season. Two tournaments in, the 32-year-old is yet to pick a win.
Both his tournaments were in Melbourne – one being the ATP 250 edition and the other being the Australian Open. The German lost both matches in straight sets, respectively to Mackenzie McDonald and Benjamin Bonzi.
In fact, Gojowczyk hasn’t won a match on the ATP Tour since reaching the semifinal in Metz last September. Between then and now, he has lost no less than seven matches consecutively.
A semifinalist in last year’s edition of the Montpellier Open, Gojowczyk hasn’t made it to a singles final since May 2018. His highlights last season include reaching the fourth round in the US Open, along with a handful of penultimate round appearances. He also featured in a few Challenger events but couldn’t accomplish much there.

Herbert Prevails in Qualifiers
30-year-old Pierre-Hugues Herbert defeated the likes of Sascha Wayenburg and Mikhail Kukushkin to reach the main draw in Montpellier.
Like Gojowczyk, the Frenchman’s season too hasn’t had the best of the starts either. The World No. 113 has featured only in one tournament – a Challenger event in Quimper where he lost in the opening round to Alexandre Muller.
Similar was the case for most of his previous season too, barring the runner-up feat in Marseille where he defeated the likes of Kei Nishikori and Stefanos Tsitsipas. As a doubles player, however, Herbert’s pedigree is far superior.
Partnered with Nicolas Mahut, Herbert won the men’s doubles at the French Open, ATP London, and ATP Finals – in addition to reaching the final at the Paris Masters and Lyon Open.
Gojowczyk v Herbert Prediction and Tip
Both players are coming off a bleak run in this tournament. Herbert, however, has the edge owing to the home advantage and a superior form in the doubles that should help him see this fixture through. He may be the underdog here but can very well add to Gojowczyk’s misery.
