Zverev Back to Winning Ways
After a disappointing straight sets defeat to Denis Shapovalov in the fourth round of the Australian Open, Alexander Zverev made a winning return in Montpellier. The World No. 3, who had a first-round bye, needed just an hour and 19 minutes to dispatch American Mackenzie McDonald in the second round on Thursday.
Dominant from the start, Zverev didn’t face a break point in the first set while he converted two of three to take the set easily. He also went a break up in the second but the American fought back to take the set into the tiebreak. McDonald then surged ahead to a 2-4 lead in the tiebreak, but eventually the top seed took charge to seal the contest 6-2, 7-6 (7-5).
With the win, the 19-time tour-level champion improved to 8-1 in Montpellier. He had gone on to win the title in 2017 by defeating Richard Gasquet in the final. He could be facing the Frenchman in the semifinals if both win their last eight matches on Friday.
In his other main draw appearance in Montpellier, he made it to the semifinals in 2016 only to fall to France’s Paul-Henri Mathieu.
The Olympic gold medallist won six titles last year, which included the ATP Finals titles along with two Masters 1000 crowns in Madrid and Cincinnati. He will be aiming for a similar return this season and would be hoping to capturing his first title of the season in Montpellier.

Mannarino Knocks Out Defending Champion
Adrian Mannarino marched into the last eight with a straight sets win over defending champion David Goffin.
The French left-hander got two breaks in a row to take a 3-0 lead in the first set but the Belgian came right back into the contest, winning the next three games and sending the set back on serve. Mannarino got his nose in front with another break and then held on to the advantage to take a one-set lead.
He was in complete control of the second set. Although he failed to capitalise on three break point chances in the third game of the set, he broke the World No. 52 twice later to advance with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in an hour and 30 minutes.
This is the first time the 33-year-old has reached the quarterfinals of the tournament after making five previous appearances. He had begun the tournament with a 6-2, 6-4 drubbing of Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
With Thursday’s win, the 58th-ranked Mannarino improved to 5-3 in 2022. He had beaten the 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz and the 18th seed Aslan Karatsev to reach the fourth round of the Australian Open only to fall to eventual champion Rafael Nadal.
Zverev v Mannarino Prediction and Tip
Although Mannarino has looked good over the last two matches, he will struggle big time against Zverev. The German has won all six of their previous meetings and should go 7-0 up with a straight sets win on Friday.
