Karen Khachanov v Alexei Popyrin Head to Head
The players played once before and that match came last year in Dubai. It was a pretty close match with Khachanov getting the win 6-4 3-6 7-6(4).

Karen Khachanov opened the year with some very good performances down under. His first event came in Adelaide where he played well reaching the final but ultimately lost to Gael Monfils in straight sets. He played in Adelaide 2 the following week but lost to Arthur Rinderkench in a very close match.
After that, he played at the Australian Open defeating Denis Kudla in the first round. He followed it up with a win over Benjamin Bonzi before losing to Rafael Nadal in four sets. Khachanov has played pretty good tennis in the past year but he is yet to find the top level he flashed earlier in his career.
A traditionally very good performer indoors, Khachanov will have a chance to continue those great results in Rotterdam. The first test will be Popyrin who is a measured opponent but certainly, not one Khachanov can’t overcome.
He will need to serve well and he has been so far this year. If he can continue to do that he should have a good showing here.

Popyrin Fumbling the 2022 season
Alexei Popyrin was slated for a breakout year in 2022 with the young Australian possessing everything he needs to become a top player. His year so far has been less than ideal as the Australian has a 1-4 record so far. His only victory of the year came in Melbourne over Stefano Travaglia with four consecutive losses after that.
He was able to play one indoor match in Montpellier a few days ago but it wasn’t a very good match. He was solid enough but when it mattered the most he faltered against Filip Krajinovic. It is something that is a problem for Poyprin as he oftentimes is known to throw away matches.
To be able to deal with pressure is what will make or break his career and he will need to find a way to overcome his nerves when it matters the most. Khachanov is not the ideal opponent for that sort of thing as the Russian is rarely rattled during matches.
Khachanov v Popyrin Prediction and Tip
This is a very interesting matchup and it promises to be a classical indoor match. We will see serves dominating on both sides and how ends up serving better will most likely win. As the better player, Khachanov has a bigger margin of error in his game compared to Popyrin.
The Australian will need to be really sharp if he hopes to overcome the Russian who has played rather well in Rotterdam so far. Both have a strong forehand as well which should be useful in the rather fast indoor conditions in Rotterdam.
Khachanov is the favourite to win this match as he is more consistent in his game and actually showed a rather high level so far this year. If he replicates close to it he will cruise in this matchup. If he plays average he might lose one set but not the whole match.
