Giron Looking to Consolidate
Giron is looking to consolidate on the achievements of 2021, which was his most successful year on tour since turning pro.
Highlights including reaching the third round of the French Open, his best result to date in a Grand Slam, and reaching his first ATP semi-final at the Sofia Open, whilst there were also quarter-final appearances in Halle, Metz and Winston Salem.
And, like Sandgren, he represented his country at the Tokyo Olympics, reaching the second round of the singles.
He lost the three singles matches he played on Australian soil in January – losing in straight sets in the first round of the Melbourne Summer Set, in Sydney, and then the Australian Open, although he did have the misfortune there of being drawn against Rafael Nadal.
However, he had better fortune in the doubles and, with partner Soonwoo Kwon of South Korea, they reached the third round of the Grand Slam.

Sandgren Had a Delayed Start to the Season
Sandgren has twice been a quarter-finalist at the Australian Open, and has been in two senior ATP finals, finishing runner-up in the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in 2018, and winning in Auckland a few months later.
At that stage he was threatening to break into the world’s top forty. But it has been downhill since then, as he has suffered a sustained loss of form.
A bout of Covid delayed the start to his 2021 season, but, when he did return to court, he was selected to represent the USA at the Olympics where he finished fourth in the doubles, along with partner Austin Kraijcek.
This year he decided not to compete in the Australian Open because of the Australian’s government’s insistence on all players competing needing to be vaccinated.
A vaccine sceptic himself, he took to social media to say he had made the right decision, given how Novak Djokovic was treated.
Instead, he competed in a Challenger event in Colobus, Ohio, losing in the first round.
Giron v Sandgren Prediction and Tip
Giron is not in the best of form so far, but he is playing a man who has plummeted down the world rankings. The seventh seed is odds-on to win.
