Anett Kontaveit v Sorana Cirstea Head to Head
They played several times over the years with Kontaveit winning all five of their matches played. Three of those games were played last year and Kontaveit won two of them in straight sets with one going the distance.

The way Anett Kontaveit finished the last season was truly epic. The Estonian player went on a tremendous winning streak winning back to back titles in the final two weeks of the season. That allowed her to jump dozens of spots on the ranking securing her maiden WTA Finals appearance.
She played solid at the event but ran out of gas. In 2022 she kept on winning albeit her level has not been as high as previously. In Australia, she was halted by Clara Tauson in a very entertaining match where the Danish player played superbly. In the first round in St. Petersburg, she battled past an inspired Jill Teichmann setting up this match against Cirstea.
Kontaveit is a baseliner who loves to attack and hit the ball hard. There was little variety in her game for the majority of her career but recently under the guidance of Dmitry Tursunov, she found new ways to win. Her consistency has been great lately but it can be even better. She will need it against Cirstea who is a similar player to her.

Cirstea Never Gives Up
Sorana Cirstea secured a 2nd round appearance in St. Petersburg after yet another hard-fought win in 2022. The 31-year old has had several tremendous wins this season and most of them have come after some big battles. Her match against Iga Swiatek in the 4th round of the Australian Open was fabulous with the Polish player narrowly advancing.
In St. Petersburg, she faced Vondrousova in the first round and battled past her in a superb display of resilience against very bad odds. The Czech player was a bad matchup for Cirstea able to hit the ball continuously which gives Cirstea trouble. She is a baseliner who loves to play attacking tennis.
Against Kontaveit it will be a festival of attacking display and who plays more consistently will win the match. I tend to think that Konaveit will be the one with more consistency as she has had over the past few months. If she doesn’t Cirstea will have a chance.
Kontaveit v Cirstea Prediction and Tip
The matchup paints a very clear picture when it comes to these two players. They played five times so far all matches were won by Kontaveit. A couple of them went to three sets and I think this one will too but the matchup does favour Kontaeit quite a bit.
Both are attacking players but everything Cirstea does, Kontaveit does better. She has a more powerful serve, her shots are more precise and her level is more consistent during the match. I think Cirstea will win one set as the Estonian player has not been super sharp this year but overall I do feel Kontaveit will have simply too much.
