Elise Mertens v Petra Martic Head to Head
These two tennis players faced each other twice so far with both matches a couple of years ago. The first was in 2018 and Mertens won it in straight sets with the second coming a year later and once again it was Mertens who won in two sets.

Elise Mertens has been looking fairly solid at the start of the 2022 season. Last year has not been too kind to the Belgian who disappointed in many events while flashing once at the Madrid Masters. Even in Madrid, it did not yield a final or a trophy but rather a win over Simona Halep.
So far this year she has played as she usually plays. Mertens rarely drops matches against players she is supposed to beat and that has been the case in 2022. In Melbourne, it was Danielle Collins who ended her run down under while in Sydney it was an inspired Kasatkina.
Her first match in St. Petersburg was a tricky one against a surging Cornet but Mertens was able to win that match in three sets. Something similar might happen against Martin who looked good in her first-round matchup as well but she should have enough to pull through.

Martic Ends Drought in St. Petersburg
Petra Martic finally won a match against as the Croatian player had a very rough finish to last year as well as an event worse start to this year. The Croatian played two matches in Australia at two events and lost both of them comfortably.
She did not play well at all and while her level was solid overall in her first-round match here it’s far from her best. Naturally, she does best on clay which is why she will be optimistic about the upcoming schedule but wins like the ones over Kamilla Rakhimova here help as well.
Mertens will be a different type of challenge, one that Martic has not yet passed but she will be up for it. Limiting the mistakes will be crucial especially against Mertens who can keep the ball in play for a long time.
Mertens v Martic Prediction and Tip
On surface, this looks like a one-sided match. Mertens is the better player overall especially on hard courts and she has the tools to easily defeat Martic. I don’t think it will be that easy but I don’t see the Croatian winning a set here. Mertens is just too solid overall and while the win against Rakhimova was solid it’s wasn’t particularly impressive.
If this was played on clay Martic would have more chances but I can see Mertens baiting the Croatian into long rallies which will mostly end with mistakes by Martic. Her consistency has been all over the place in the past couple of months and one victory does not change that.
