Anett Kontaveit v Belinda Bencic Head to Head

The pair have played each other twice before, at the US Open in 2019, and again at the Australian Open a few months later, Kontaveit winning in straight sets on both occasions

Kontaveit Seeking Second Swiss Win of the Week

Kontaveit ended 2021 on a high, with a late run that saw her qualify for the WTA Finals in Mexico, eventually losing in the final itself to Garbine Muguruza.

She began the new season well, reaching the semi-finals in Sydney, but would have been disappointed to be knocked out of the Australian Open at the second-round stage.

Bencic will be the second Swiss opponent she has faced in Russia, having already beaten Jil Teichmann in the first round, although she did have a blip in the middle of that match against the world number 35, dropping the second set, before regrouping to take the third.

In the second round she faced the Romanian world number 31, Sorana-Mihaela Cirstea.

Kontaveit was the first to come under pressure on serve, and had to save three break points, before breaking Cirstea in turn. The Romanian hit back to level straight away but, serving to stay in the set, dropped her serve once more.

The Estonian was the first to drop her serve in the second set but, once again, the Romanian could not profit from it.

She was immediately broken and then once more when she served to stay in the match, Kontaveit clinching the win with her third match point.

Second Quarter-Final of the Year for Bencic

Bencic was the surprise gold medallist at the Tokyo Olympics last summer, but has struggled to replicate that form since.

However, she is now into her second quarter-final of 2022 so far, having already reached that stage in Sydney before losing to the Spaniard Paula Badosa.

Not that she had things all her own way in her first round match with the local Russian Veronika Kudermetova, the world number 29.

She took the first set easily enough, but Kudermetova hit back to level in the second, and she needed a third set tie-break before she could finally celebrate victory.

Her second round match with the Slovenian qualifier, Kaja Juvan, the world number 107, was more comfortable, especially in the first set which she took for the loss of one game.

Juvan made more of a fight of it in the second, and gained encouragement when she broke the Bencic serve. Unfortunately for her, she allowed the Swiss woman to level,  and it was Bencic who was the stronger player in the resultant tie-break.
