Opelka Wins 46-Point Tiebreaker to Down Isner

An extraordinary 46-point tiebreak finally ended with Opelka edging out compatriot John Isner to claim the second set and clinch the semifinal contest 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (24-22).

Isner, who was part of two of the longest matches in Wimbledon, has now become a part of the longest tiebreak in a tour-level match since the start of the ATP Tour in 1990.

The two-hour-and-three-minute contest witnessed 60 aces from the two with Opelka firing 39 of them. Putting up a great serving display, Isner dropped just 14 points on his serve, while Opelka dropped 15 in the match.

In the dramatic tiebreak, Opelka saved as many as 10 set points, before converting an eighth match point to march into a fourth tour-level final. The 2021 Canadian Masters runner-up, won the titles in New York in 2019 and in Delray Beach in 2020.

The 24-year-old has started the year well and is 7-3 from his 10 matches so far this year, which includes a semifinal appearance in Sydney and a run to the final in Dallas.

He hasn’t been broken this week and has already fired in 84 aces in the three matches leading up to the final.

The 6’11” American defeated German qualifier Cedrik-Marcel Stebe 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-8) in the Round of 16 and then eliminated France’s Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 6-4 in the quarterfinal.

Brooksby Saves 4 Match Points

World No. 54 Jenson Brooksby denied Marcos Giron a chance to reach a first tour-level final, as the 21-year-old saved four match points in the third set to reach a second final in his young career.

In what was the longest match in Dallas this week, the American needed two hours and 56 minutes to beat his compatriot 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5).

This is Brooksby’s first tour-level tournament in 2022 and the 2021 ATP Newcomer of the Year has already made an impressive start reaching the final.

The fourth seed had beaten Italy’s Andreas Seppi 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the Round of 16 and then handed a 6-3, 6-0 drubbing to Australia’s Jordan Thompson in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Besides finishing runner-up in Newport last year, he was also a semifinalist in Washington and Antwerp during a fantastic 15-7 season.

This year, he had only featured in the Columbus Challenger before the tournament in Dallas, and there he lost in the semifinals to Yoshihito Nishioka.

Opelka v Brooksby Prediction and Tip

Both had a mentally exhausting semifinal, but both showed the ability to thrive under pressure. They can expect another draining final. Brooksby found a way to blunt out Opelka’s big serves the last time they met in Antwerp and he will be hoping to do it again. Brooksby could win a maiden title on Sunday.
