Pedro Martinez v Juncheng Shang Head to Head

The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the 24-year-old Spaniard, and his Chinese opponent, who is seven years younger.

Martinez’s Consistent Record in 2022

Martinez reached his first senior ATP final last year, losing in three sets to Casper Ruud in Kitzbuhel.

And he also tasted success on the Challenger tour, winning on home soil in Seville in September, his third success at that level, with all but one of them coming on clay, his preferred surface.

His record in 2022 is very consistent so far – played in four tournaments and reached the second round of each.

That includes both events played on the South American swing this year.

In Cordoba he beat Thiago Monteiro, before losing to local man, Juan Ignacio Londero.

Then last week in Buenos Aires, having got past Alejandro Tabilo of Chile, it was Fabio Fognini who ended his interest in the tournament.

Shang Making his ATP Main Draw Debut

Last year. Shang became the number one junior ranked player, and was a runner-up on the US Open in the Junior event.

He also reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, and the last eight at the French Open.

Shang made his debut on the professional tour at the Miami Open last year, where he was given a wildcard into the qualifying competition, but failed to get beyond the first round on that occasion.

This is a big step up for a young man who has only played in one Challenger tournament so far in his short career.

Most recently he played in an ITF tournament in Florida, where he is based, and exited that event at the quarter-final stage.

Martinez v Shang Prediction and Tip

For Shang this will be a novelty and a great experience, but it would be a huge turn-up for the books if Martinez did not keep up his record by reaching the second round in Rio.
