Aryna Sabalenka is the top seed at this week’s Dubai Championships, but it will be interesting to see if the Belarusian is past her serving wobbles.
Sabalenka had a disastrous start to the season when she lost back-to-back opening matches at two Adelaide tournaments. And she was on the ropes for much of the Australian Open despite being labeled as one of the favorites to win the title.
Sabalenka survived three rounds serving a litany of double faults and fighting off tears. But she came unstuck in the fourth round when an in-form Kaia Kanepi stopped her in her tracks.
With a 3-3 record for the year, this has been far from an ideal start to 2022 for the power-hitting Belarusian. At this juncture last season, she had already won a title at the inaugural Abu Dhabi Open. So could a return to the Middle East spark the top seed into life?

Kostyuk Imperious In Qualifying
Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk registered another devastating performance in the qualifiers to reach the main draw of the Dubai Championships.
The rapidly-improving Kostyuk backed up her victory over Diane Parry with a 6-1 6-1 win over Harriet Dart. The World No. 49 fired four aces and saved four of six break points on her serve. Kostyuk also came up trumps on the return, with 64% of first-return points against the Briton.
Kostyuk is coming off a very decent third-round run at the Australian Open where she made the third round and pushed her good friend Paula Badosa to three sets.
She will make her main draw debut in Dubai on Tuesday, but it is almost a case of baptism by fire as she takes on the top seed right of the bat. Can she produce an upset?
Sabalenka v Kostyuk Prediction and Tip
If Sabalenka overcomes her serving yips, I expect the Belarusian to progress. But Kostyuk looks good value to bag at least a set.
