Shapovalov Looking to Overcome Rotterdam Setback
After suffering a shock first-round defeat to World No. 137 Jiri Lehecka in Rotterdam, Denis Shapovalov begins his campaign in Doha on Wednesday, with hopes of recapturing the form that saw him lead Canada to maiden ATP Cup title, and reach the quarterfinals of the Australian Open for the first time in his career.
In his only appearance at the Qatar Open last year, Shapovalov won his Round of 16 match against Vasek Pospisil but fell to Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. He is the top seed this year and the expectations will be higher this time.
He is 7-3 in 2022, which included a 3-1 run at the ATP Cup.
At the Australian Open, the 2021 Wimbledon semifinalist, who had never gone past the third round, defeated Alexander Zverev en route the quarterfinals but failed to find a way past Rafael Nadal.
Ranked No. 12 in the world, the 22-year-old had a 30-23 season last year, which included runner-up finishes in Geneva and Stockholm.

Molcan Rallies Past O’Connell
Slovakia’s Alex Molcan rallied from a set down to beat Australian qualifier Christopher O’Connell in the first round on Monday.
After both players exchanged a couple of breaks in the first set, O’Connell dominated the tiebreak to go one-set up. In the second, Molcan went a break up twice but the Australian got them back on both the occasions to stay on serve. Eventually the set too needed a tiebreak, which Molcan won to stay alive.
Molcan got the first break of the third set but O’Connell wiped off the advantage immediately. However, Molcan broke again in the 10th game to win the two-hour-and-38-minute contest 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
The World No. 73 Molcan improved to 4-3 in 2022 following the win. The 24-year-old leftie had begun the season by reaching the last eight at the Melbourne Open. He won his first round match at the Australian Open against Roman Safiullin but lost in the second round to Pablo Andujar and then made a first round exit from Montpellier.
Molcan, who has more experience and better record playing on clay, has not played much at the top level, but made his first ATP tour final in Belgrade-2 last year. Can he stun the top seed and keep his run going?
Shapovalov v Molcan Prediction and Tip
Shapovalov was in great form down under, but found it difficult to adapt to conditions in Rotterdam. He will be hoping to strike form immediately in Doha. Expect the Canadian to return to winning ways with a straight sets win.
