Cilic In Solid Form
Marin Cilic has begun the year in great form and will be looking to build on the start on his Doha debut.
The fourth seed has a 7-3 record this year, which includes runs to the semifinals in Adelaide-1 and Adelaide-2 and the fourth round of the Australian Open.
A former World No. 3, the 2014 U.S. Open champion is climbing back the rankings. He had a pretty good 2021 season, that saw him end a three-year title drought to claim his 19th and 20th titles in Stuttgart and St. Petersburg respectively. Currently ranked No. 24, the 33-year-old was also a finalist in Moscow and represented Croatia in the title clash at the Davis Cup.
A two-time Grand Slam runner-up, Cilic ended 2021 with a 33-23 record, an indication of his return to form after two poor title-less season.
The Croatian will be hoping to make a good start in Qatar and make another deep run this year.

Van de Zandschulp Knocks Out Fabbiano
World No. 50 Botic van de Zandschulp reached the second round of the Qatar Open with a straight sets win over Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano in the first round.
The 26-year-old Dutchman served six aces, converted four of seven break points and saved one of three to score a 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) win in an hour and 33 minutes.
Van de Zandschulp, who made heads turn with his run to the quarterfinals on his U.S. Open debut last year, had come to Doha with a 5-4 record in 2022. A quarterfinalist in Melbourne, he reached the Round of 32 at the Australian Open.
However, the Dutchman struggled in the other two tournaments he featured in, making a first round exit from Adelaide-2 and reaching only as far as the second round at home in Rotterdam, before being beaten by the tournament’s surprise package Jiri Lehecka.
Yet to reach a tour-level final, Van de Zandschulp will be aiming to enter the quarterfinals for the second time the season with a win on Wednesday, but faces an opponent who rolled past him in his only semifinal appearance on the tour in St. Petersburg last year.
