Sabalenka Hold Off Kostyuk

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka stormed into the Round of 16 with a straight sets win over Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in the first round on Tuesday.

In what turned out to be a very tough first set, there were six consecutive breaks of serve following Kostyuk’s hold of serve in the first game. Serving at 3-4, Sabalenka held serve to draw level and then broke the Ukrainian a fourth time in the set, before holding serve to close out the set.

Having closed out the first set, Sabalenka start dictating terms in the second. She would break the World No. 49 three times in the second set and advance with a 6-4, 6-1 win in an hour and 15 minutes.

A two-time Dubai quarterfinalist, Sabalenka hasn’t been in best of forms in 2022. Let down by her serve, the Belarusian double faulted 39 times in her first two tournaments in Adelaide, making a first round exit in both. The 23-year-old continued to struggle with her serve at the Australian Open, yet she reached the fourth round before exiting the tournament.

On Tuesday, in what is her fourth tournament of the season, the 10-time tour-level champion had nine double faults, eight of which came in the first set, while she improved through the course of the match.

Kvitova Storms Into Round of 16

2013 Dubai champion Petra Kvitova began her 2022 campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Camila Giorgi of Italy in the first round on Monday.

The World No. 25 saved all four of the break points that she faced while breaking her opponent twice in the first and thrice in the second set. The 31-year-old, who has struggled with form in the first four tournaments this year, will be happy with her dominant showing in the first round, where she needed just 70 minutes to dispatch the Italian, ranked No. 29 in the world.

A 28-time champion at the tour-level, Kvitova last won a title in Doha last year. That was her only final in an 18-11 2021 season.

This year, the left-hander lost in the first round in Adelaide, in the second round in Sydney and in the opening round of the Australian Open. She won a second match of the season in St. Petersburg last week, but was sent packing in the second round by Irina-Camelia Begu.

Monday’s win was Kvitova’s third win of the season, and since it came against a top 30 player she will take a lot of confidence from the match. She was  champion in Dubai in 2013 and finished runner-up to Belinda Bencic in 2019. How far can the Czech go this year?
