Basilashvili, Seeking Reprieve on Familiar Grounds

Nikoloz Basilashvili is the defending champion here in the Qatar Open, having won the title last season after losing five ATP matches consecutively.

By the looks of it, history is repeating itself again as the Georgian finds himself in a similar situation. So far in 2022, the number three seed has gone winless in his last five tournaments, putting him at 0-6.

He arrived in Doha following first-round exits in Montpellier and Rotterdam, respectively to Damir Dzumhur and Mackenzie McDonald. Before that, he was put down by Andy Murray in Sydney and the Australian Open.

That said, World No. 22 has clearly got the potential to snap out of this funk. In 2021, Basilashvili won the Bavarian Championships and later, was a runner-up in the Indian Wells Masters – a feat he achieved after dispatching Karen Khachanov and Stefanos Tstisipas en route. The 29-year-old was also a semifinalist in Halle.

Ymer Avenges his Recent Loss

Elias Ymer started his campaign in Dohas the lucky loser (having lost in the qualifiers) against the fellow LL Joao Sousa in the opener. The Swede won the match 2-6, 6-3, 7-5, in two hours and 15 minutes.

With that, he also avenged his recent defeat at the hands of the Portuguese in ATP Pune a few weeks back. Ymer squandered a set lead and multiple match points in that semifinal bout, giving Sousa an opening into the final.

That was Ymer’s best run of the season; the #138-ranked player also featured in the Australian Open but fell in the qualifiers.

Looking at his overall form, Ymer is yet to win a singles title on the ATP Tour. Last year, he ended the season with a tally of 5-8 having spent most of his time on the Challenger circuit (to little avail).

Basilashvili v Ymer Prediction and Tip

Ymer has got a good chance here to deliver an upset early in the competition; his opponent is out of sorts and if he starts strong, he can convert that momentum into a win. But it will not be easy, given Basilashvili’s experience and a superior pedigree. This match may very well go to three sets.
