Pablo-Carreno Busta v Fabio Fognini Head to Head
The pair have played each other eight times before, and the Spaniard has won all but one of those matches, although the Italian did win their last encounter in the 2021 ATP Cup.
Four of Carreno-Busta’s wins came on clay.

Carreno-Busta Making Season Debut on Clay
Carreno-Busta enjoyed the best year of his career in 2021, reaching three finals and winning two of them, both on clay, in Andalucía and Hamburg. He also returned home from the Olympics with a bronze medal.
And he has made a strong start to 2022 as well, winning all three of his matches in the group stage of the ATP Cup and helping Spain make the play-offs before losing to the eventual winners Canada.
From there he went to Melbourne, where he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the third time in his career, before his run was ended by another Italian, Matteo Berettini.
Not having played since, this will be his first match of the year on clay.

Fognini Draws Heart from Victory over Argentine
Fognini came into Rio in the middle of a prolonged slump, not having reached the third round of any event since the Olympics last July.
He will, therefore, have taken some heart from the way he dealt with the challenge of the Argentine, Facundo Bagnis, the world number 77, in their first round match on Tuesday.
Fognini began strongly, breaking the Argentine in the opening game of the match, and then underlined his position with a further break as he cruised through the first set.
Again, Bagnis dropped his serve at the start of the second set, and that proved to be decisive.
There were no further breaks, although the Argentine did save three match points before the Italian made the fourth one count.
Carreno-Busta v Fognini Prediction and Tip
The weight of history is firmly on Carreno-Busta’s side in terms of past results between the two. Fognini’s best chance may be to hope that the Spaniard takes a little time to adjust to playing on clay again.
