Berrettini Set For Rio Debut

Matteo Berrettini is making an unaccustomed appearance in South America. The World No. 6 is set to feature at the most prestigious tournament in the Golden Swing for the first time.

Berrettini’s first trip to Rio is certainly welcome news for the tournament organizers who have been yearning a top name to headline the ATP 500 event.

The Italian power hitter is one of two Top-10 players (along with Casper Ruud) in a strong field that also includes former champion Diego Schwartzman and the talented Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz.

Berrettini has not picked up a racket since losing in the semifinals of the Australian Open to Rafael Nadal last month. He is 6-3 for the season.

And for all the fawning of Berrettini’s hard-court excellence, he has won three of his five career titles on clay. So it is clear, the 25-year-old Italian is not a one-surface wonder.

Monteiro Beats Baez Under The Lights

In his sixth main draw appearance at the Rio Open, Thiago Monteiro ensured he would not suffer a humiliating first-round exit in front of his home crowd.

Monteiro overcame a stern test in the form of Sebastian Baez, winning 1-6 6-4 6-4 , in a match that lasted two and half hours.

Monteiro, who is a wild card entrant at his home tournament, performed terribly in the first set in which he was broken three times. But that only managed to ignite interest from the crowd. And almost by osmosis, it transferred to their player.

Monteiro began the second set by recapturing his fluency and timing, hitting the ball immaculately well. He nudged ahead with a break of serve in the third game and kept consolidating to draw level.

The Brazilian lefty would continue in similar form at the start of the third set when he broke his Argentinean opponent to lead for the first time in the match. But Baez remained under his skin as Monteiro’s nervousness came to the fore.

Ultimately, the home support played a part in aiding Monteiro to cross the finish line. He overpowered Baez in the final few games to reach the Round of 16.

Berrettini v Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Sometimes the weight of expectation can be a burden to a home player. And Monteiro nearly suffered such fate on Tuesday. And against Berrettini, the man from Fortaleza is less likely to have so much joy.
