Delbonis Survives Galan

Federico Delbonis started his campaign in Rio with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Daniel Elahi Galán Riveros in the first round.

The 31-year-old Argentinean is hoping to reach his second consecutive semifinal (and possibly go further) on the tour. Last week, Delbonis played in his home tournament in Buenos Aires where he was one of the last four – ultimately losing to Casper Ruud.

That was one of the better performances from the current world number 37 this season. Before that stint in the Argentina capital, Delbonis was on a four-match losing streak spread across Australia and Cordoba.

Interestingly, he reached the quarterfinal in Rio just twice in his career while in his last four attempts here, he has never made it past the second round.

Alcaraz Outperforms Munar

18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz defeated his compatriot Jaume Munar in the Rio opener with 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.

The Spaniard is playing in his second tournament of 2022 with a career-best ranking as World No. 29. His last stint was the Australian Open where he reached the third round before losing to Matteo Berrettini.

Alcaraz enjoyed a phenomenal spell last year and rose from mediocrity to glory. He started the year outside the top 140 and moved on to win the Oeiras Challenger, ATP Umag, and the Next Gen ATP Finals in Italy. He also reached the semifinal in Marbella, Vienna, and Winston-Salem, and the quarterfinal in the US Open.

With this kind of consistency and form, it is only a matter of time before he picks up bigger titles. The youngster has already beaten a handful of big names in his career and while he lacks experience, he makes up for it with grit and perseverance.

Alcaraz v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

Alcaraz has everything going on for him at the moment while Delbonis is struggling with form woes. He will start as the favourite and should do well to reach the quarterfinals.
