Tsitsipas Into a Third QF in 2022

Two-time Marseille Open champion Stefanos Tsitsipas dumped out Hugo Gaston of France in the Round of 16 on Thursday to advance to a third quarterfinal this season.

The top seed, who began the year at the ATP Cup, is playing his third individual tournament in 2022. He was a semifinalist at the Australian Open and a finalist in Rotterdam last week.

The seven-time tour-level champion got an early break in the first set only to see Gaston break back in the seventh game. The Greek restored the advantage in the very next game and then served out the set without much trouble.

Neither player was broken in the second set, which eventually needed a tiebreak that Tsitsipas won to wrap up the one-hour-and-30-minute contest 6-3, 7-6 (7-4). With the win, the 23-year-old improved his season record to 11-3 and his Marseille record to 10-3.

Tsisipas defeated Mikhail Kukushkin to win the title in 2019 and Felix Auger-Aliassime in the title clash in 2020. He faces a potential semifinal against the latter, a week after losing to the Canadian in the Rotterdam final. But for a rematch, both Tsitsipas and Auger-Aliassime will have to win their quarterfinal matches. Last year, the Greek had stumbled at this stage against Frenchman Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Safiullin Digs Deep to Reach Maiden ATP QF

World no. 163 Roman Safiullin has reached a maiden ATP QF with a second consecutive come-from-behind win on Thursday.

The 24-year-old Russian, who won two of his four matches at the ATP Cup this year, knocked out the Czech Republic’s Tomas Machac 6-7 (6-8), 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in the second round.

The two-hour-and-45-minute contest was just four minutes longer than his first-round win over Australia’s Alexei Popyrin. He had dropped the first set in that match as well but bounced back to force the decider and then saved a match point in the third, before winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

Against Machac, Safiullin struck 12 aces, two less than the Czech. He won 82% of the first serve points though and converted two of four break points while saving one of two.

Safiullin had qualified for the main draw with straight sets wins over Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis and Germany’s Julian Lenz.

Tsitsipas v Safiullin Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas won’t take his opponent lightly, particularly after his determined efforts over the last two rounds. However, the Greek will still be a heavy favourite to advance to the last four.

Tip: Tsitsipas to win in three sets: 3/1 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
