Fognini Rallies Past Carreno Busta
Fabio Fognini won a humdinger against fourth seed Pablo Carreno Busta on Thursday to move into a second straight quarterfinal this year.
The World No. 38, who fell in the quarterfinals of the Buenos Aires Open last week, was cruising in the first set after going a break up in the very first game of the match. But he failed to serve out the set in the 10th game, wasting two set points and allowing the Spaniard to draw level. Carreno Busta held serve the next game and then converted a third break point in a six-deuce 12th game to close out the first set.
The 34-year-old clawed his way back in the second set. He saved three break points in the set and got a vital break in the ninth game that helped him seal the second.
The deciding set began with both players exchanging breaks in the first two games, but it was the Italian who got his nose in front with a second break in the seventh game and then sealed the match with a third break in the ninth to score a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 victory in two hour and 55 minutes.
With the win, Fognini improved to 4-3 in 2022. A nine time champion on the tour from 19 finals, Fognini was a finalist in Rio in 2015 and a semifinalist in 2018. This will be his fourth quarterfinal appearance in the tournament.

Coria Battles Past Verdasco
A day after dismissing fifth seed Cristian Garin in dominant fashion, Argentina’s Federico Coria had to work hard for a three-set victory over Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the second round on Thursday.
After a three-hour-and-three-minute up-and-down battle, Coria finally outlasted the Spaniard 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-4 to reach a second consecutive quarterfinal in 2022. Last week, he lost in the last eight stage in Buenos Aires to Casper Ruud.
Thursday’s Round of 16 match saw Coria convert four of 13 break points and save 13 of 17. The Argentine won a total of 119 points, seven more than the World No. 172.
Ranked No. 63, the 29-year-old was also a quarterfinalist in Rio on his debut in 2020.
He began his 2022 campaign with a 6-2, 6-0 drubbing of 2020 champion Garin.
