World No. 31 Veronika Kudermetova comes to Doha as Dubai Tennis Championship finalist. The Russian, who was the runner-up at Melbourne Summer Set 1 to start the season, reached the final in Dubai this week, but fell short of the title yet again, falling to Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets.
The 24-year-old right-hander, who lost to Simona Halep in the Melbourne final, didn’t have to play the semifinal in either of the tournaments. She got a walkover against Naomi Osaka in Melbourne, while it was Marketa Vondrousova who withdrew from the semifinal in Dubai.
Overall, Kudermetova is 8-4 in 2022. This will be her third appearance in Doha. She lost in the second round in 2020 and was beaten by Garbine Muguruza in the first round last year.
Muguruza, the World no. 7, is one of the two higher ranked players she defeated in Dubai. The other was World No. 17 Victoria Azarenka. Her third win came over Jil Teichman in the quarterfinals.
She will be hoping to keep her winning streak going in the first round in Doha.

Kalinina is 1-3 in 2022
World No. 50 Anhelina Kalinina is coming off a decent 2021, where she went 11-8 and reached her maiden final in Budapest.
She hasn’t started 2022 well. The 25-year-old lost her opening round match to Clara Tauson at Melbourne Summer Set 2. She got her first win of the season over Romania’s Sorana Cîrstea in Adelaide but fell in the next round to America’s Alison Riske.
She also suffered a first round defeat at the Australian Open, falling to Jessica Pegula despite taking the first set.
The Ukrainian will be making her first main draw appearance in Doha. She entered the qualifying rounds in 2019 but couldn’t go past the first qualifying round.
