The pair have never played each other before. This will be the first match between the Italian, who is 20, and the Spaniard, who is two years older.

Sinner’s Main Tour Debut in 2022

Sinner had a highly successful 2021, appearing in five finals and winning four of them, ending the year a top ten player.

He began his year in Australia, playing in the ATP Cup for Italy, where he won all three of his singles matches. It was not his fault that his team failed to progress out of the group stage.

From there it was on to the Australian Open where he reached the quarter-final for the first time, emulating his previous best at a Grand Slam.

The Italian was eventually beaten in straight sets by the world number four, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and has not played since, waiting until Dubai to make his main tour debut for the year.

He should be well rested.

Doha Quarter-Finalist Davidovich-Fokina

Like many Spanish players, Davidovich-Fokina was brought up on clay, and that is the surface on which he has had most success.

However, whilst many of his compatriots headed off to play in the South American swing after the Australian Open, he headed back to Europe, not that it did him much good results-wise, with first round defeats in Montpellier and Rotterdam.

He snapped that losing sequence in Qatar last week by beating first the Tunisian wildcard Malek Jaziri, and, then, more impressively, Dan Evans, the world number 28, in three sets.

His run was ended by a familiar face, in the form of compatriot Roberto Bautista-Agut, convincingly beaten in a match in the course of which he won only two games.

Sinner v Davidovich-Fokina Prediction and Tip

As long as Sinner shows no signs of ring rust, not having played since the Australian Open, he should win this match with ease.
