Cirstea Reaches Top 30 Again

Sorana Cirstea has been one of the most improved players in the past 12 months. The Romanian veteran’s resurgence is now complete.

She ended her 13-year title drought at last year’s TEB BNP Paribas Tennis Championships in Istanbul. She did so without dropping a set all week. That title success punctuated this unlikely climb towards the world’s Top 30 again.

At 31, Cirstea is playing her 16th season on the pro tour in 2022. Her current campaign has had mixed results. She did reach the fourth round of the Australian Open for the second time in her career last month, but aside from that, results have been far from convincing at other tournaments.

The Romanian World No. 30 has tallied two wins at three tournaments outside the Melbourne Slam. And judging by her record in Doha down the years, she is unlikely to improve that much on her 5-4 win-loss record in the current campaign.

Sherif Earns Wild Card In Doha

For the second year in a row, Mayar Sherif has found a slot in the main draw of the Qatar Open. Sherif, who is Egypt’s top-ranked female player, was always going to have a reserved wild card on Arab soil.

Following her breakthrough year in 2021, Sherif achieved some groundbreaking milestones. She is slowly becoming a national treasure back home.

Among a long list of records she set last season, Sherif became the first Egyptian player to break the world’s top 100 after winning the WTA 125K title in Karlsruhe.

But 2022 has started in a terrible fashion. Sherif is 0-4 at the start of the year and won one set in that span. Her last match win came on the clay courts of Buenos Aires at the start of November last season.

A return to the Middle East was expected to spark Sherif into life, but the World No. 65 endured a frustrating afternoon against Elina Svitolina at last week’s Dubai Championships.

Cirstea v Sherif Prediction and Tip

After a career-best season on the WTA tour in 2021, Sherif hasn’t set the world alight in the new season. Without a single win heading to Doha, her task of eradicating that form won’t get any easier against a seasoned veteran like Cirstea.
