Elena Rybakina v Jaqueline Cristian Head to Head

It’s 1-0 to Rybakina with her sole win over Cristian coming in the 2019 WTA Bucharest with 6-1, 6-0.

Elena Rybakina started the 2022 season on a solid note but has since been plagued by health concerns. Since reaching the final in Adelaide International (lost to Ashleigh Barty), the Kazakh has withdrawn from three subsequent matches in Sydney, Melbourne, and St. Petersburg.

The World No. 16 was inching closer to a top 10 debut but with this loss in momentum, she may have to wait for a little while longer.

The 22-year-old did not participate in the Dubai Tennis Championships, choosing to focus on her recovery and gearing up for the year’s first WTA 1000 event. Her best result in the competition came in 2020 when she reached the round of 16 before withdrawing from that game. Last year, she was stunned by Laura Siegemund in the opener.

Nonetheless, Rybakina had a good stint in 2021 as she reached the semifinal in Eastbourne, Chicago, and the Olympics, and made her last eight debut in a Grand Slam in French Open.

Cristian, Starting as the Lucky Loser

Originally, Rybakina was slated to play Marketa Vondrousova but the Czech withdrew from the event citing health issues and fatigue from her busy week in Dubai.

Jaqueline Cristian benefited from that retirement and earned herself a ticket to the main draw. She started as a qualifier and after beating Ulrikke Eikeri, she lost to Oceane Dodin.

So far in 2022, the 23-year-old Romanian is yet to make it past the second round in a WTA event. In Sydney and Melbourne, she had the misfortune of running early into the big guns like Madison Keys and Barbora Krejcikova. Cristian also participated in St. Petersburg Open where she fell to Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

Although she is ranked #67 at the moment, it is not too far from her career-best spot of #58 – something she achieved at the end of January. Last year, Cristian reached her maiden WTA singles final in Linz to cap what had been a pretty decent season (14-9, one ITF final, debut in top 100).

Rybakina v Cristian Prediction and Tip

This is a good opportunity for Rybakina to ease back into the sport and see how she fares. Cristian isn’t the most formidable of the opponents on the tour and that should make things easier for her.

Expect the Kazakh to win this one.
