Aryna Sabalenka v Alize Cornet Head to Head

It’s 1-1 from their two previous meetings. Cornet won in Rome in 2019, while Sabalenka won in Dubai last year.

Sabalenka Looking to Overcome Service Woes

2020 Qatar Open champion Aryna Sabalenka will begin her 2022 campaign against Alize Cornet on Tuesday. The Belarusian is the top seed but doesn’t bring a good form to the tournament.

Sabalenka is 4-4 in 2022. She had a terrible start to the year, making first round exits from both the Adelaide tournaments after she struggled with her serve, double faulting 39 times in the two matches.

Her struggles with serve continued at the Australian Open, as she double faulted 41 times in the first three rounds, yet found a way to beat Storm Sanders in the first round, Wang Xinyu in the second and Marketa Vondrousova in the third rounds. In each of those matches she fought back from a set down to advance. She was eventually beaten in the fourth round by Kaia Kanepi. Yet again it was a three-set affair and yet again Sabalenka had double faults in double figures making 15 of them.

Sabalenka was also the top seed in Dubai last week. The World No. 2 defeated Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk in straight sets in the first round but her struggles with double faults continued as she had nine of them in the match. She fell to Petra Kvitova 4-6, 4-6 in the Round of 16, this time double faulting just six times in the match.

So overall, it’s been a year of struggle for the 23-year-old, who was 45-18 last season and won two titles in Abu Dhabi and Madrid to take her tally to 10 WTA titles. One of those came in Qatar two years ago, when she defeated Kvitova in the final.

Last year, Sabalenka was beaten by Garbina Muuruza in the Round of 16.

Cornet Rallies Past Samsonova

World No. 37 Alize Cornet fought back from a set down to eliminate Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova in the first round.

After a two-hour-and-25-minute contest, Cornet prevailed over the Russian 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Cornet saved two of seven break points and converted five of 10 to carve out a gritty win.

This is the second time this year that she has won a first round match. The only other occasion when she won her opening round was at the Australian Open, where the 32-year-old went on to reach her first major quarterfinal.

Cornet had beaten the third seed Garbine Muguruza in the second round and the 14th seed Simona Halep en route the last eight in Melbourne but was blown away by Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals.

This is Cornet’s fourth appearance in Doha and she has never gone past the Round of 32.

Sabalenka v Cornet Prediction and Tip

Sabalenka has had a tough year so far, and Cornet will give her a tough fight in the second round match. But the Belarusian should still find a way to reach the Round of 16.
