Darya Kasatkina surprised many this year with her level of tennis and the confidence she is displaying on the court. For the most part, she demonstrated all of that before but it was strictly tied to clay courts where the Russian always excelled. Holding a 9-4 win/loss record on the year is very good and she will be looking for win number 10 against Cristian. The Romanian is a measured opponent but she will prove a bigger challenge than Ajla Tomljanovic. Kasatkina was down a break against the Australian in the 3rd set but rallied in a fabulous fashion to win the match.
She will need to keep up that level against Cristian who his the ball very hard and can play quite streaky at times. Confidence will be on the side of Kasatkina as she is fairly close to the top 20 and a good result in Doha could certainly propel her there.

Possible Breakout Event for Cristian ?
Jaqueline Cristian patiently worked on her tennis for several years. Never the most talented one the Romanian persisted with hard work and a relentless style of tennis that sees her rarely give up. Self-belief is firmly engraved in the mentality of the Romanian who faces an uphill battle against Kasatkina.
She lost in the qualies but entered the main draw as a lucky loser and she used that fully. Faced with Elena Rybakina, Cristian bravely played her game and bested her opponent in straight sets for the major upset. The 71st tennis player in the world will have a solid chance for a deep run here if she continues to play that way.
It’s only a matter of time when Cristian finally breaks out as she certainly has the game and level for a much higher ranking and Dubai might provide a solid chance for that. Kasatkina is better but she is also vulnerable especially on hard courts that favour players that can hit the ball hard and Cristian is just that.
Kasatkina v Cristian Prediction and Tip
This matchup on paper definitely favours Kasatkina and there is a very good reason for it. The Russian has been performing really good this year and there is very little incentive not to trust her against an inferior player. Cristian did extremely well to take down Elena Rybakina in stellar fashion but she also lost to Dodin in the qualifiers.
It’s hard to predict which Cristian will show up as her best version can certainly beat Kasatkina. The chances are unlikely that she puts up two spectacular efforts in a row and Kasatkina has been quite good this year. The Russian came back in superb fashion to beat Tomljanovic and she should be confident heading into this one.
Cristian hits the ball hard but she is a very poor defender. Kasatkina has the ability to spread her around the court and I doubt Cristian will be able to find the counter. Back the Russian to take this one.
