Schmiedlova Picks Up First Win of 2022

After getting off to a 0-3 start, World No. 88 Anna Karolina Schmiedlova notched her first win in the main draws this year as she defeated Spain’s Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in the first round of the Guadalajara Open on Monday.

The 27-year-old won 24 of 33 total points in the first set to win it in just 24 minutes. The second set was a close affair, with both players breaking each other thrice in the first seven games. But eventually it was Schmiedlova who earned a fourth break near the closing stages of the set and then held on to the lead to knock out the World No. 47, 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 11 minutes.

A quarterfinalist in the tournament last year, Schmiedlova had just won two qualifying rounds in Sydney this year. She lost her opening round matches to Jasmine Paolini in Melbourne, Ajla Tomljanovic in Sydney and Jelena Ostapenko at the Australian Open.

A three-time tour-level champion, the former No. 26 will look to reach a second consecutive quarterfinal in Guadalajara on Wednesday.

Potapova Advances After Tsurenko Retires

An elbow injury forced Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko to pull out of her first round match while trailing Russia’s Anastasia Potapova 4-6, 2-2 on Monday.

As a result of the withdrawal, Potapova ended a series of four consecutive main draw losses and advanced to the second round of a tournament for the first time since reaching the last eight of the Melbourne Summer Series 1 in January.

Potapova was knocked out of the last eight stage in Melbourne by Veronika Kudermetova and since then she lost her first round matches in Adelaide 2, Australian Open and St. Petersburg Open.

Ranked No. 111, the 20-year-old is a two time finalist at the tour-level. She will be hoping to reach the last eight on her Guadalajara debut.

Schmiedlova v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Schmiedlova is the more experienced of the two and after beating a higher ranked player on Monday, she will be high on confidence. Expect her to advance to the last eight.
